The City of Fredericton will hold a sale of backyard composting units and kitchen catchers Saturday from 7:30 a.m.-noon at the city’s parks and trees division depot located on the north side at 100 Two Nations Crossing.

The price for the Earth Machine compost bins is $35 while Kitchen Catchers, used for collecting compostables, are $5.

Cash and debit cards will be accepted.

“We continue to encourage our residents to be active composters. It keeps organics out of the landfill and helps keep neighbourhood gardens and lawns green,” said Coun. Eric Megarity, chairman of the city’s public safety and environment committee.

“The City of Fredericton is an active participant in composting. We use mulched Christmas trees and leaves collected in the fall in our municipal compost facility. It has made a big difference to our municipal landscaping projects.”

Composting is a method of treating organic waste in which the material is broken down by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen to a point where it can be safely stored, handled and applied to the environment.

Up to 75 per cent of household waste is derived from organic matter, and most of it can be composted.
